Kogyo Tsukioka 1860-1927

Kogyo, his real name was Hanyu Bennosuke, was a pupil of Ogata Gekko (1859-1920). He was fond of Noh-gaku, traditional Japanese theatre that the artist succeeded his interest onto printmaking. Kogyo was the first major artist who produced a large collection of Noh series.

Kogyo’s mother re-married to Yoshitoshi and therefore Kyogo inherited Yoshitoshi’s name ‘Tsukioka’ after Yoshitoshi’s death.
