Masaharu(Seiji) Aoyama 1893-1969

Aoyama Masaharu (Seiji), born in Saitama prefecture studied traditional ink painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. Following his studies he took a position at the Imperial Household Museum, which he kept until his early retirement in 1936. Aoyama exhibited his ink paintings in the official state controlled Teiten events, an equivalent of the French Salon. He produced his first prints in the 1920s. Some self-carved and self-printed (jizuri) some published with cooperation of Ishiyama publishing agency, are in close relation with the modern manner of the Sosaku Hanga movement. Aoyama’s favourite subjects were kachoga, images of birds, flowers and small animals.
