Natori Shunsen 1886-1960

Printmaker best known for his portraits of kabuki actors in shin-hanga style. He started off as an illustrator for Asahi Shinbun newspaper after completing studies of classic nihon-ga, Japanese- style painting, with Kubota Beisen and at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. As he was exhibiting his portraits of popular actors he drew attention of Watanabe Shozaburo, publisher who revolutionized the 20th century production of traditional woodcut handprints and started designing for him as from 1915. He continued to work with different publishers and made several beauty prints as well but remains recognizable in pursuing the yakusaha-e tradition throughout his carrier.
