Utagawa Yoshitaki 1841-1899

Printmaker, painter and newspaper illustrator. Born in Osaka as Nakai Kojiro, also worked under the name of Nakai or Ichiyōsai Yoshitaki. Student of Utagawa Yoshiume, whose school he left at the tender age of 15 to work independently. He became a member of the Kamigata-e school in Osaka, and between 1860 to 1880 a leading and active figure in the Osaka School. We know of about 1,200 print designs by Yoshitaki. He is said to be the last Kamigata artist. In 1880, he moved to Kyoto, then to Sakai in the Osaka district.
