Yanagawa Shigenobu 1778-1832

Painter and printmaker, student and son-in-law of Hokusai, finally adopted by the great master. This Yanagawa born artist (hence his surname) specialized bijin (beautiful women), landscapes and surimono prints- limited specially commissioned editions ordered for special occasions. He also illustrated books.

 

For a short time Yanagawa worked in Osaka (1822-1825), where he collaborated with an exquisite woodblock cutter Tani Seikō.

 

The list of his students includeShigemasa, Shigeharu, Shigemitsu, Yanagawa Nobusada (aka Yokinobu), and Kuninao.
