Yoshiiku Utagawa 1833-1904

Printmaker and newspaper illustrator, son of a tea house proprietor. Also known as Ochiai Yoshiiku. Alongside his collegue and rival Yoshitoshi, a member of the Utagawa Schoolunder Utagawa Kuniyoshi. He is one of the co-founders of the Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shinbun.

 

Yoshiiku's works raised current matters and political events, the series ‘Comical Record of Japanese History’ (Kokkei Wanisshi-ki) for example ridicules Japanese military actions in China.
