A five case lacquer inro

Mid 19th century

An unsigned five case inrō covered in black and golden lacquer. Body of the inro is decorated with a landscape of torii, trees and a blossoming plum tree in a mulch. The top and bottom covered in nashiji. Torii is a gate found in shrines indicating space sacred for the Japanese. hinoki, the cypress is an evergreen plant, and plum blossoming through the snow in early February symbolize power of life, endurance and wellbeing. All that makes a mix of auspicious symbols bringing luck to the owner of this special inrō.
