A three case inro

Item code : EDi012

Size 5.5 x 5.5 cm

A mid 19th century unsigned small three case inrō decorated in black lacquer depicting a Zen thought: strict religious practice and earthly concerns, both lead to enlightment. One side depicts a waterfall landscape with a pine tree in takamaki technique.  Waterfalls are important to Japanese people: according to the shinto beliefs, they are inhabited by spirits and posses purifying powers. The stoic practice of prayer under a waterfall is greatly admired. The other side of the inro shows symbols of labour: two bundles of brushwood, a rake and a sickle near a stream in takamakie technique; sickle is inlaid with mother of pearl.

Good, few chips and scratches.
