Amida on a lotus

Item code : EDw004

Size 21.5 x 18.5 cm, figure 29.5 cm
Date Edo (1615 - 1868)

A statue of Amida Nyorai standing on a blossoming lotus indicating His purity.

Amidas hands are positioned in Vitarka mudra: left hand held up at chest level, inside facing the viewer, left at the hip level. Middle fingers touching the thumbs create a circle: this gesture symbolizes one of the stages of Amidas preachings, the moment of augmenting about the Law, Dharma. Vitarka is reserved for images of the Great Buddhas. Amidas feet are exposed, which would suggest that this image was produced for exoteric sect of Buddhism.

Urna, the Third Eye in the middle of His forhead is inlayed with a round crystal, Nikkei, the Wisdom Jewel- with a red stone.
