19th Century.

'Nasu' or 'Nasubi' in Japanese language, aubergines were presented at the temple Todai-ji Shoso-in, Nara in 750 according to its written document. This is the oldest record found in Japan. As the origin of aubergine is India and Southern Asia, it is a seasonal food and usually harvested during summer months.

In this netsuke, the egg-shape was beautifully carved between two leaves and two holes at the bottom.
