An original woodblock print used to illustrate an edition of 'Omokage Genji gojuyo-jo' (The remembrance of the fifty four chapters from the Tale of Genji). The Tale of Genji (Genji Monogatari) is a classic work of Japanese literature written by the Japanese noblewoman Murasaki Shikibu in the 11th century, during the Heian period. It captures the exploits of Prince Genji and provides a document of Heian court life.
