Ball Lifter

Produced in mid-19th century. ”Tamajii", literally ball lifter, is the old man holding the ball. Some believe that he is holding his scrotum which is swollen because of illness. 

Gyokkei, 玉珪, was a netsuke carver in late Edo period(mid-19th century). He carved mainly wood and his favourite motif was human beings and animals. 

Ivory inlaid in the left eye, the mouth and his signature.
