Egrets in rain

SOLD

Item code : DUB054

Artist Koson Ohara
Subject Animal & Birds
Publisher Watanabe Shozaburo
Format Oban (Vertical)
Date Circa Early 20th C.

Description

Published in the early 20th century.

This print shows two little egrets in flight, against a backdrop of a green willow and a green-gray background of rain. The print is very atmospheric and full of contrast, really pulling the eye towards the details of the birds' bodies. As herons stand for longevity and the path to good fortune or heaven in Japan, as well as being associated with purity in Buddhism in particular, this print could be said to represent an interesting narrative of struggle and perseverance.

Sealed as Shoson.
