Fine four case inro with a parrot

Item code : EDi007

Size 9.5 x 5.5 cm

Late 19th century
A fine four case
inrō. On fine copper colour nashiji background, there is an image of parrot on a tree is executed in takamakie technique with great details. The parrot is perched on a blossoming tree. Below is a bush of Peonies, regarded to be the king of the flowers. This inrō probably belonged to a person with an interest in things expensive, rare and exotic. Nihongi, an early Japanese chronicle mentions a parrot given as a present to the empress in 697 by the Chinese ambassadors. They must have been regarded as luxury pets.

Very good. Small chips and restorations on the edges.
