The man depicted in this print is Sawamura Chojuro V playing the role of Umeno Yoshibei.

In the play, Yoshibei is looking for the sword which his master lost. He finally finds it, but as the sword is for sale he asks his brother-in-law to give him money to buy it. Yoshibei’s effort to convince him are in vain, and eventually he decides to kill him. The highlight scene of the play is when Yoshibei takes off his headscarf got a lock at the end, which has a special meaning: it is the symbol of the oath he made to his master; not to ever fight or kill anybody. By killing his wife’s brother he breaks his pledge and therefore has to take his scarf off.

Yoshibei' crane on winter coat is made in blind embossing print.
