Lacquer inro for a kabuki actor

Item code : EDI015

Size Inro: 9.5 x 8.5 cm, netsuke: 11 cm

Mid 19th century

This mysterious inro was probably used on theatre stage. Unusually large was easy to spot from the audience, however it had no practical use, as it does not open into compartments. It is covered with black lacquer and decorated with floral ornaments and a family crest of two crossed scrolls. The netsuke is also quite large, in the shape of the Namazu fish, a monster believed to live under the Japanese archipelago, pinned down with a huge rock. Sometimes when it is trying to brake free, its movements cause earthquakes.

Very good.
