Subject Landscapes
Series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji
Publisher Nishimuraya Yohachi
Format Oban (Horizontal)
Size 24.9 x 36.4 cm
Date Circa Early 19th C.

The print is part of Hokusai's most acclaimed series: 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji' which was designed by the artist when he was in his seventies. Hokusai produced 36 designs and further a group of ten prints was published as additional production, hence, the series consists of 46 prints.

The voyagers are resting on the hillside. The three of them try to measure the circumference of an enormous tree but they cannot reach all the way around. The large vertical line of tree breaks the image of triangle Mt Fuji at the background. This print represents a design of geometric composition which is often shown in Hokusai's work.
