Red lacquer manju netsuke

SOLD

Item code : EDn040

Description

This is called manju netsuke, which is round enough to hold onto a sash. Manju means in Japanese a round sweet cake, and lends its name to objects that resemble their oval shape. It's red colour comes from a lacquer technique known as tsuishu that was introduced originally from China around 1000 years ago. Numbers of extremely thin layers of lacquer are applied before the surface is carved.

This netsuke is open in hemispherical and the black lacquer has been applied inside.
