Artist Hokusai Katsushika
Subject Landscapes
Series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji
Publisher Nishimura Yohachi
Format Oban (Horizontal)
Date Circa Early 19th C.

Published ca. 1831-1835

This print shows a snow-capped Mount Fuji, seen from Sundai in Edo, which is the Surugadai neighbourhood of Tokyo today. Pedestrians of various social classes are descending a slope towards the Sumida River, walking past a house on the right and a number of large pine trees on the left side of the print. We can see travellers, pilgrims, merchants, labourers and a samurai with his three servants walking along this path.

For another view of Mount Fuji along the Sumida River from this series, please have a look at Hokusai’s print, titled ‘Tsukuda Island in Musashi Province’.
