Series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji

This print shows a snow-capped Mount Fuji, seen from Sundai in Edo, which is the Surugadai neighbourhood of Tokyo today. Pedestrians of various social classes are descending a slope towards the Sumida River, walking past a house on the right and a number of large pine trees on the left side of the print. We can see travellers, pilgrims, merchants, labourers and samurai with their three servants walking along this path.

For another view of Mount Fuji along the Sumida River from this series, please have a look at Hokusai’s print, titled ‘Tsukuda Island in Musashi Province’.
