Description

Yabu Meizan was considered as one of the greatest ceramic artists of Japan during the 19th and 20th century. He was born in Osaka in 1853 and studied painting techniques on ceramics in Tokyo. He returned to Osaka and established his workshop in 1880.

He created a new form of intricate artwork characterized by detailed landscapes and  intricate decorative motifs. The early artworks were so detailed that one would need the aid of a magnification glass to appreciate the fine miniature paint work. During the 20th century he adapted his work to appeal to a wider audience, simplifying the motif and design to keep up with the fashion of the period while maintaining his attention to detail throughout.

The theme of freely-drawn maple leaves on these artworks is a fine example of a simple design with delicate workmanship, unrivalled by any artist of the period.
